Stayton council backs bigger budget

An officer will be hired; water, sewer rates will increase

The Stayton City Council approved a $26.7 million budget at its Monday meeting, a nearly 12 percent increase from the previous year.

Officials said that some of the increase has been earmarked for staffing and facilities improvements.

The 2008-09 budget will allow the Stayton Police Department to add an additional full-time police officer (an estimated $70,000 in salary and benefits) as well as the pool to hire a supervisor (an estimated $30,000 expense).

Interim City Administrator Don Eubank said the police department hasn’t added a new officer position in almost 20 years.
